Concussion

Concussion

Concussion is a traumatic brain injuries that can result from a blow to the head or a sudden jolt to the body, causing symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, and cognitive difficulties. While rest is crucial in the immediate aftermath of a concussion, physical therapy plays a vital role in the rehabilitation process, helping individuals recover from lingering symptoms and regain function.

UCC Physio, our Clinical Director specializes in concussion management and will conduct a thorough assessment to evaluate the individual’s symptoms, balance, coordination, and cognitive function. Based on this assessment, personalized treatment plans are developed to address the specific needs and goals of the individual.

Treatment for concussion-related symptoms may include a combination of vestibular rehabilitation, which focuses on addressing balance and dizziness, and ocular motor training to improve visual tracking and coordination. Gradual return-to-activity programs are also implemented to safely reintroduce physical exertion and prevent symptom exacerbation.

In addition to in-clinic interventions, physical therapists provide education on energy conservation strategies, symptom management techniques, and gradual return-to-play protocols for athletes. They also collaborate with other healthcare providers, such as neurologists and neuropsychologists, to ensure comprehensive care and optimal recovery.
