Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common condition characterized by numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand and arm caused by compression of the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. This compression can result from repetitive hand and wrist movements, underlying medical conditions such as arthritis or diabetes, or anatomical factors.

At UCC Physio, our team of practitioners play a vital role in the management of carpal tunnel syndrome, offering non-invasive approaches to alleviate symptoms and improve function. Treatment typically focuses on relieving pressure on the median nerve and addressing contributing factors such as muscle imbalance or poor ergonomics. Our practitioners employ a variety of techniques, including manual therapy, nerve gliding exercises, and therapeutic modalities like ultrasound or electrical stimulation, to reduce pain and inflammation and promote healing.

In addition to in-clinic interventions, physical therapists provide education on ergonomic principles, proper wrist positioning, and activity modification to help prevent exacerbation of symptoms. They may also recommend splinting to immobilize the wrist and alleviate pressure on the median nerve during certain activities or nighttime sleep.
